Three hundred and twenty-five may seem like a small number on paper, but in Boone County, it represents the number of students homeless as of 2024 according to the Kentucky Department of Education. The inclusion of such a statistic is in hopes that the reader may realize how close homelessness is to Northern Kentucky. As a reaction to this issue, the Senior Beta Club of Walton-Verona High School has stepped up and out the door to Hope Ministries to offer their services.
Hope Ministries is an organization in Florence rallying the community together to care for those who cannot afford food or housing. With a new building on Dixie Highway, Hope Ministries was in need of some volunteers to help organize the new space and a group of Senior Beta Members were more than willing to jump in! The students were tasked with boxing out-of-season items, moving bins, and shelving clothing. Even in the simplicity of the jobs they were given, these volunteers had a profound effect on the community. In the furthering of Hope’s completion, people will find solace in the welcoming environment of the building’s structure.
The entrance of the building reflects the open hearts of the organization just as the stocked shelves reveal the generosity of the community. Once guided past the kind smiles of the front desk workers, people will be able to shop using Hope dollars. The Hope dollars are given to clients twice a month and they can spend it within the store set up in the building. They will be able to select clothes, food, and even decorative items. Evident in the Hope Dollars, Hope Ministries is aiming to not just feed the homeless for one day, but teach them how to be filled for life.
