Homecoming week is quickly approaching, which means the Spirit Stick is up for grabs. This brings the question – what is the spirit stick all about? The answers come from the creator, Mrs. Mayer. So, we thought it beneficial to conduct an interview with the one and only.
The question presented to Mrs. Mayer, “When was the tradition of spirit week along with the spirit stick started?” She responded, “I started the Spirit Club in 2019-2020 when I came to Walton Verona HS. We did not have a club to promote school spirit, and several students asked if I would bring back the spirit club. Before our first pep rally, the 19-20 Spirit Club made the spirit stick to be awarded to the class with the most positive spirit at the pep rally. We have since added the dress up days for spirit week and a formula for scoring the classes at the pep rally.”
To win the spirit stick, grade levels must have the most points from Monday-Friday’s festivities, which include participation in spirit week, grade level activities, and school spirit at the pep-rally. Points are tallied up and revealed at the end of the pep-rally to show the winner of this year’s spirit stick!
Thus far, the competition has heated up between last year’s seniors and sophomores. Who will gain it next week? That will be up to all of you!
