Our day was met with the dreaded announcement one hopes will never come over the PA system, “Please initiate the Lockdown Procedures.” Of course, as a teacher, the first thing that comes to mind, “This was not announced as a practice. Something is wrong.” Everyone gets in lockdown mode and follows the procedures outlined in our practice sessions, calmly and collectively. A bit of nervousness initially set in, but was quickly put to the side. I was confident all measures were being taken to assure my safety, as well as the safety of all those within our walls, which even includes my own daughter. In fact, my nephew spoke to me hours later, “Aunt Jamiee, weren’t you afraid.” My answer, “No, not really.” He couldn’t understand my response, “Why were you not afraid?” My response, “I knew it was being taken care of.”
This is the kind of school I am proud to work in. Lyrics from a song crossed my mind multiple times today, “I’m Not Worried Bout a Thing.” Thank you to all parties who assisted in maintaining calmness and leaving me, and all others within our district, feeling a sense of reassurance.
