With Veterans Day coming up, it is a good time to learn who our veterans are at Walton Verona High school. Our high school military veteran staff consists of Mike Kelly, who is a maintenance worker, our psychologist Chad Harrison, and bus drivers Bob Arlinghaus and Pat Moran. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Harrison, and he had a few things to say about his time in the military. When asked why he joined the military, he first mentioned he felt a sense of duty and patriotism, and these both drove him to his decision. He also remarked that he was looking for a comradery that only the military could bring to him. Mr. Harrison was a part of the Army and told me he joined the Army because that is what he had always envisioned when he thought of joining the military, and he wanted to be a part of the military police. Finally, Mr. Harrison told me that the military has benefitted his life in many ways. He says that the military vastly improved his work ethic in every way and shifted his mentality when it came to doing challenging tasks. The last thing he mentioned was that the military allowed him to grow his character because you see things that you wouldn’t normally see if you weren’t in the military. We should all take more time to appreciate and learn from our Veterans.
