Education looked a bit different this week, as the Boone County Sherriff’s Department came to present to our WVHS students RYDE (Responsible Young Driving & Education). Boone County police officers, Walton-Verona Fire Department members, the Air Care Team, and various others joined together to create a live re-enactment of a car crash scene involving a drunk driver and victims of the crash. Students were able to see first-hand the potential dangers which included Landen Tingle, a drama student, dead on site; a video that included the testimony of a student who did in fact, get prosecuted for vehicular manslaughter following the crash the day of her prom; a sobriety test and arrest for the “driver,” Zoey Parker; and a helicopter drop from the Air Care Team, who transported the “seriously injured victim,” Keegan Gregory.
The event while very emotional for some will, we hope, hinder students from making unwise decisions the night of Prom and be attentive in the future to laws concerning driving that are present to keep them and others safe. As pointed out by myself and the officers, cars can be deadly weapons when placed in the wrong hands and when driven by those who do not follow the law. Be safe at all times for yourself and others!
