Every year on April 22nd, people across the country celebrate Earth Day by taking steps to protect the environment. At Walton-Verona, students and staff are doing their part in a simple but effective way. Most classrooms are equipped with a recycling bin. With bins around the whole school, students can easily separate paper, plastic, and other matierals instead of just throwing everything away. It’s a simple habit that helps reduce waste and reminds everyone to be more aware of their impact on the environment. However, as students get older, Earth Day doesn’t always seem to get as much attention. In elementary school, there are often activites like crafts, outdoor cleanups, assignments based on the planet but, in middle and high school, the day can start to feel like just another date on the calendar. It feels like after schedules get busier and classes get harder, it makes less time set aside for special activites. Even so, small efforts like using the recycling bins in most of the rooms shows that caring for the environment doesnt have to be a one day event. Happy Earth Day everyone!
