After Scrooge evolves from his grouchy, stingy self to a delightful, grateful man, he speaks the famous lines, “I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year.” Of course, I know this implies the spirit of Christmas in light of thankfulness, camaraderies, and gracious acts. But in this quote lies another question, is there a time Christmas can come too early? According to students at WVHS, while Christmas does offer festiveness, decorating for Christmas should not be done before November 1st. One student, Kyah Toller stated, “Under no exceptions should Christmas decor go up before November 1st, and even then it is stretching it.” Despite the fact, she admits to listening to Christmas music at times in June or July. Could this be because it creates a “jolly” feeling, as expressed by McKenzie Hayden.
Some students even going as far as saying, decor should not even be set up until after Thanksgiving, stating it would be like “decorating for Easter during Valentine’s Day” or “setting out your turkeys before kids have the chance to trick-or-treat” (Madelyn Ryan). Kameryn Limle went as far as calling it “malicious” to decorate before November. Apparently, October is for Halloween, November is for Thanksgiving, and December is for Christmas.
